Talking Points: Three key messages to share: We are changing the way you get and renew your driver’s license or identification card, starting on March 26, 2018. Customers can renew their driver’s license or ID up to 12 months in advance. Massachusetts driver’s licenses and identification cards are acceptable for travel and federal purposes until October of 2020. Additionally, you can discuss what REAL ID is and how customers can get more information. REAL ID is new type of driver’s license or ID card. REAL ID is a requirement of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005, which sets security and identity standards for state issued driver’s licenses and ID cards. On October 1, 2020, a valid U.S or foreign passport, U.S. passport card, military ID, or a REAL ID license or identification card will be required to enter certain U.S. government buildings and to board flights within the U.S. Residents who have a valid passport will never need a REAL ID. The Registry has created an online tool to help customers decide if they need a REAL ID. www.mass.gov/REALID Key message: No one needs a REAL ID until October of 2020. Passport holders never need one.
