Smitty Pignatelli, August 21, 2022. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Elizabeth Freeman Monument Unveiling Celebration Weekend August 19, 20 & 21, 2022 Sheffield will celebrate the 241st Anniversary of Elizabeth Freeman's historic court case leading to the abolishment of slavery in Massachusetts with a series of events the weekend of August 19-21, 2022. The culmination of the weekend is the unveiling of a bronze statue of Freeman that will stand on the Sheffield Green. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = CELEBRATION OF ELIZABETH FREEMAN IN SHEFFIELD Friday- Elizabeth Freeman and the telling of Black stories The W. E. B. Du Bois Center for Freedom and Democracy will present the roundtable on Fri., Aug. 19, at 4pm at Dewey Hall. A reception will follow. Saturday- “Meet Elizabeth Freeman” play On Sat., Aug. 20, at 7pm, Wanda Houston will portray Freeman in “Meet Elizabeth Freeman,” a one-woman play by Teresa Miller at the Old Parish Church. Since a large number of people are expected to attend, the performance will be live-streamed and projected at Dewey Hall and the Sheffield Library. Sunday- The commemorative walk This year, the walk will start at Ashley House at 9:30 on Sunday morning and end at Dewey Hall, where people will have a chance to cool off and rest before heading over to the unveiling ceremony at 11:45. A shuttle will leave from Dewey Hall to Ashley House at 9am. (If needed, the shuttle will make more than one run.) More information available on the Sheffield Historical Society’s website.
