Description

Massachusetts Medical Society presents "Physician Focus." "Concussions." = = = = = = = = = = Concussions The severity and potential long-term health effects of concussions are now recognized at all levels of sports, from the professional ranks to youth leagues. According to estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, up to four million concussions from sports and recreational activities occur each year in the U.S. In Massachusetts alone, reports from middle and high schools show that more than 4,400 concussions and head injuries may occur in a single school year. Yet some medical experts have expressed concern that an excessive fear of concussions has arisen, thus discouraging parents and health experts from letting children play healthy team sports, especially as obesity rates continue to be high among young people. This edition of Physician Focus features one of the nation's leading experts on concussions and head trauma and will discuss many aspects of this brain injury, including its causes and health consequences, how it's diagnosed, gender differences in susceptibility to the injury, the dangers of second concussions and "sub-concussive impacts," and what can be done to reduce the incidence of concussions.
