AN EVENING WITH DENNIS KUCINICH
Saturday, May 14th, 2016 • 4:00 PM
Former Congressman and presidential candidate Dennis J. Kucinich will speak on Saturday, May 14, at Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington. The evening, sponsored by the Kushi Institute and Berkshire Co-op Market, will also include filmmaker and vegan activist, Elizabeth Kucinich. The event starts at 4:00 pm. Admission is open to the public and free of charge.
Kucinich, a longtime leader of the peace caucus in Congress and prime mover of national legislation to label Genetically Modified Organisms in food, will receive the annual Kushi Peace Prize. Named after the late macrobiotic educator and founder of Kushi Institute, Michio Kushi, the prize is awarded to an individual for their outstanding contribution to health, peace, and sustainability. The annual prize was established last year after Mr. Kushi passed away at age 88 and is awarded in mid-May on the Saturday nearest his birthday (May 17). Last year’s award was given to Shizuko Yamamoto, who introduced shiatsu massage to America and was active in non-GMO activities.
The day of the award has been designated One Peaceful World Day and is celebrated in macrobiotic homes and communities around the world. Mr. Kushi’s major book on personal and planetary peace, One Peaceful World, will come out in a new edition this May. The book coauthored by Alex Jack, executive director of the Kushi Institute, includes a foreword by Mr. Kucinich and will be published by Square One Publications in New York.
Mr. Kucinich first became involved with macrobiotics about 20 years ago when he attended a program at the K.I. In the years since, he has worked closely with Mr. Kushi, Alex Jack and Edward Esko (managing directors of the K.I.), and others on health and peace issues, especially on providing healthier food to families and schools, and on GMO testing and labeling. Since leaving Congress, Mr. Kucinich has been a popular speaker and national television commentator.
